Former Fianna Fáil junior minister and TD Lorcan Allen is to be readmitted to the party on Friday, following a one-year suspension.

Mr Allen was removed from the national executiveand suspended from the party after he circulated bogus election literature purportedly signed by the Taoiseach during last year's local elections. Party sources said yesterday he would be able to attend national executive meetings and be a full member after the year's suspension lapsed.

Mr Allen represented Wexford in the Dáil for several years and was a minister of state for agriculture under Charles Haughey.

His suspension arose following an investigation by the party's rules and procedure committee. Mr Allen admitted sending out over 2,000 letters in the run-up to the local elections.

Voters were urged to support Mr Allen over his running-mate Pat Rath. Mr Allen was elected.

At the time, Mr Allen apologised to Mr Ahern for using his signature, attributing his action to "the pressurised atmosphere of an intensive election campaign".
