Profile: The former chief of staff at the office of vice-president Dick Cheney, Lewis "Scooter" Libby was indicted on charges of perjury, making false statements and obstruction of justice on October 28th, last year. Jury selection for his trial is expected to begin next January.

In his testimony before the grand jury investigating the Valerie Plame affair, Mr Libby reportedly testified that he learned the diplomat Joseph Wilson's wife was in the CIA from NBC correspondent Tim Russert, who denied providing the information to Libby. According to the New York Times, documents show that Libby may have first learned about Ms Plame from Mr Cheney.

The charges stem from whether Mr Libby tried to impede the special prosecutor's inquiry by withholding information about conversations he had with the vice-president about Ms Plame. After the charges were announced, Mr Libby resigned his post. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
