Killarney, Co Kerry

Shortlisted - Best Place to Holiday

Nominated by Maighread Forde, who wrote: "The view is the first thing that takes your breath away. But one can't holiday on views alone. Around Killarney you can walk, take boat trips on the lakes, cycle, tour Muckross House or Ross Castle, go to the playground or the pet farms, go horse racing, golfing, fishing, run a marathon or learn to cook."

WHAT THE IRISH TIMES SAYS
There are excellent views of the mountains overlooking the town. The streets were very clean and there were trees and flowers lining the footpaths of the main streets throughout the town.

The streets are filled with various businesses ranging from small coffee shops to small independent shops. There are numerous hotels, pubs and restaurants throughout the town which are ideally located close to the local natural attractions such as the National Park and Muckross Gardens. Killarney draws a lot of tourists and locals are very welcoming. Dunnes Stores, Tesco and Aldi are all within walking distance from the town centre. Lidl is also present in the town but more on the outskirts. Killarney National Park appeared to be something of great pride amongst the locals.

While there were clear signposts to all of the tourist attractions, the one-way traffic system throughout the town may be slightly confusing for first-time visitors. The train and bus stations are located within walking distance of the town centre. Apart from that, there are very good main roads which lead to Killarney and also open up various routes for commuters to Cork and Limerick.
