SuperValu begins a three-week Spanish wine sale on Thursday that includes some interesting bottles from outside the supermarket's normal range.
The biodynamic wines from Dominio de Punctum, which come from the first organic vineyards in Spain, are well worth trying. There is a good selection of other organic wines, too, including the sulphur-free Davida range, as well as special offers on many of their regulars.
Here are my top 10 wines from the sale.
Davida 2019 White No Added Sulphites, Navarra, organic
€12, down from €14.76
Soft easy fruits with orange peel and toasted almonds. Try this on its own or with grilled plaice.
Vinas del Vero Gewurztraminer 2020, Somontano
€10, down from €14.99
A restrained, refreshing style of Gewürztraminer, lightly aromatic with crisp acidity, smooth layered pears and pineapples, and a rounded finish. This would partner Asian dishes and mild creamy prawn or chicken curries very nicely.
El Paular Chardonnay Seleccion 2020 Dominio do Punctum, biodynamic
€10, down from €14.75
This has attractive medium-bodied lightly tropical fruits with lime zest, a touch of toasted nuts and a good brisk, dry finish. A useful all-rounder with most fish, shellfish and white meats.
Martin Codax Albariño 2019, Rias Baixas
€15, down from €17.70
From one of the largest producers of Albariño, this is very stylish dry white, with appetising light clean pear fruits and plenty of zip. This is made to go with all kinds of fish, and shellfish in particular.
Ace Kicker Big Bet Blend 2018, VdT de Castilla
€8, down from €12
A blend of six grape varieties, this wine is aimed at the Dada wine drinker, with rich coffee, dark fruits and a medium-dry finish. Not my style of wine, but I am sure it will go down well. Drink with spiced pork, beef or lamb.
Davida 2018 Red No Added Sulphites, Navarra
€12, down from €14.76
Attractive juicy, ripe red-cherry fruits with a smooth finish. A refreshing, easy-drinking wine to go alongside pork and chicken dishes. Try it with grilled pork chops and roast red peppers.
Pablo Claro 2019 Graciano Cabernet Sauvignon, Dominio de Punctum, Castilla, biodynamic, Castilla
€10, down from €14.75
Firmly structured ripe dark fruits, a touch of spice and a toasty note, with a long, dry finish. Try this with a roast of beef or a striploin steak.
Purgatori 2017, Costers del Segre Torres
€20, down from €29.51
Full-bodied but still refreshing, with plenty of bright dark fruits and spice, finishing on a dry tannic note. Try this with a rare steak or a warming winter stew.
Salmos Priorat 2016, Torres
€20, down from €29.51
Warm and rounded with smooth, elegant cassis and liquorice, with well-integrated tannins on the dry finish. One to drink alongside a roast of lamb.
Torres Floralis Moscatel Oro
€12 per 50cl, down from €14.76
If your Valentine has a sweet tooth, this might be a wine to serve with chocolate or desserts at the end of the romantic dinner-à-deux you prepare. Textured, rich, sweet and honeyed, with seductive grape fruits.
