Funding schools

Sir, – Referring to the correspondence on school funding (Letters, January 4th), while I agree there should be equity, this has more than one dimension. I submit that equity in the funding of schools needs to be counterbalanced with other considerations.

For some children, boarding in a fee-paying school can be the only option, whether for geographical or family reasons, reasons of religious affiliation, or even exceptional developmental needs.

To underfund these schools may therefore be to threaten or even deprive such children of an education, their right under our Constitution. – Yours, etc,

DESMOND SWAN,
