Build-to-rent apartments

Sir, – James Grant (Letters, November 13th) has got lost in translation. The concern in terms of planning permission is not “transient” people, but rather structural “transience” in build-to-rent housing that has inherent barriers to people putting down roots and forming new communities.

These barriers are very high rents, insecurity of tenure, low standards of space and amenity, and a disproportionate number of very small and tightly packed apartments. When we welcome people to Ireland, we must ensure that their housing can be their home.

– Yours, etc,

ORLA HEGARTY,
