Sir, – Your editorial (October 25th) is exactly right to warn about the rise of far-right polemicist Eric Zemmour in the upcoming French presidential race.
It is not too much to say that Zemmour is contaminating the discourse with his support of the racist “Great Replacement” theory – he harkens back to earlier shameful forces in French politics, like Charles Maurras and his anti-Semitic “Action Française”.
The difference being, of course, that Zemmour blames all of France’s woes on a different enemy, namely Muslim citizens.
Although his provocative statements and actions are reminiscent of Donald Trump’s behaviour, Zemmour’s eloquence and pseudo-intellectual political philosophy makes him in some ways even more dangerous than the former American president. – Yours, etc,
