Sir, – As the horrors continue daily from Ukraine, the German government continues to refuse to stop using Russian gas on the basis that the damage to German industry and their economy would be too great.
Yet a little over a decade ago, Germany was the arbiter that imposed massive austerity on EU countries such as ourselves, Portugal, Spain and Greece. It moralised at the time that we had been profligate and deserved to take the pain.
It is a cruel irony that it is now Germany that is effectively financing Russia’s war which is massacring thousands and displacing millions of innocent Ukrainians.
The other EU members need to say enough is enough. – Yours, etc,
