The English FA have confirmed that they expect demolition of the existing Wembley Stadium to begin "within the next few months".

Eight months after the FA admitted the project was doomed to failure without the injection of government funds, there appear few obstacles still standing in the way of the new development.

"We will meet them and I think we are very, very close.

The FA announced last month that Wembley had re-emerged as its preferred site for a new national stadium.

And with the Government now cautiously giving the project their backing, it seems that the tortuous saga may be approaching an end.

Davies added: "We have to give certain assurances on corporate governance and management of the project and we have to show that the project is there.

"It is key that the Government shows, and we show, that we are at one and I believe that that will be happening over the next few days."
