London - The British government yesterday announced a wide-ranging shake-up of widows' benefits, which for the first time will apply to widowers as well.

Publishing a consultation paper on proposals to reform widows' benefits, the Social Security Secretary, Mr Alastair Darling, said 20,000 already widowed men and their dependants would benefit.
