The national executive of MSF, which has more than 20,000 members in the Republic, has endorsed the proposals of the Government's High Level Group on Union Recognition.

The union's deputy national secretary, Mr Jerry Shanahan, a member of the High Level Group, welcomed the decision at yesterday's meeting of the union. He said that the Government's decision to give the Labour Court greater powers to deal with recalcitrant employers was "a welcome and overdue development".

He said it was equally significant that the proposals had the support of the Irish Business and Employers Confederation and the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, as well as the State's job creation agencies.
