The Shannon Coastguard helicopter and gardai are investigating eyewitness reports that a light aircraft may have crashed on the Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry.

An air and land search was started following reports of a small plane which was trailing smoke in the region. The reports suggested that the aircraft may have come down close to the village of Lispole after 6 p.m.
