Shots fired at checkpoints in Fermanagh

Security forces in Co Fermanagh came under fire in twos separate incidents last night

Security forces in Co Fermanagh came under fire in twos separate incidents last night. There were no injuries in either attack. In the first incident a high velocity shot struck a watchtower at a vehicle checkpoint at Killyvilly in Rosslea, Co Fermanagh, at 9.25 p.m. An RUC spokesman said the single shot was followed by a burst of automatic gunfire.

A half hour later, a sustained burst of automatic gunfire was directed at British soldiers at a permanent checkpoint at Clonatty Bridge in Rosslea. The security forces believe that the shots were fired from the Border and may have come from the Republic. A full examination of both scenes will take place after daybreak.
