The Cork Regional Technical College director, Mr Patrick Kelleher, has welcomed the Minister for Education's moves to upgrade all regional technical colleges under a new Irish National Institute of Technology, writes Andy Pollak.

Mr Kelleher said Cork RTC's governing body would be "assessing the position" next week, "but what is now certain is that a process has been defined which will allow Cork RTC to achieve its objectives in the near future".

Cork RTC officials were anxious to correct the false impression given by a headline in yesterday's Irish Times that Ms Breathnach's decision had been rejected by the college authorities.

Mr Kelleher said the college's objectives were to gain "the title and status of Cork Institute of Technology" and "the power for the institute to bestow its own awards".

"Following clarifications from the Department of Education, Cork RTC is now firmly on track to achieve its long-sought status and powers," he said.
