A three-year inquiry by the Medical Council's Fitness to Practise Committee into allegations against Drogheda obstetrician Dr Michael Neary has found that he committed professional misconduct.

The findings from the council's committee will be presented to a two-day meeting of the Medical Council, which will begin in Dublin this morning.

A statement is expected tomorrow evening, though it is not yet clear if the statement will detail the sanctions to be taken against Dr Neary, who worked in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.

Over 60 women who allege that Dr Neary unnecessarily removed their wombs are expected to come before the High Court later this year.

The Supreme Court recently rejected an appeal by Dr Neary and the hospital, though it reduced a €273,223 compensation award to one of his patients, Ms Alison Gough, by €50,000.

The High Court previously found that Dr Neary was negligent in his treatment of Ms Gough at the birth of her only child in October 1992. It held that the consultant obstetrician could have carried out certain procedures on Ms Gough that would have made it unnecessary to remove her womb.
