The Government's Green Paper on environmentally sustainable energy use will be issued shortly, amid growing concerns about increasing levels of carbon dioxide emissions in Ireland. The Minister of State at the Department of Public Enterprise, Mr Joe Jacob, said yesterday the paper would indicate "how Ireland would meet its energy requirements in an environmentally and economically sustainable way".

Speaking in Dublin, where he announced details of the 1999 Energy Awareness Week campaign, and opened an exhibition on energy at Enfo, St Andrew's Street, he said: "Every person in this country needs to recognise and contribute to wards the global challenge of reducing greenhouse gas emissions."
