The owners of a bacon factory in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, have been fined £2,000 for discharging blood into a tributary of the Ballinderry River. Cookstown Magistrates Court was told yesterday that the discharge from the Unipork plant was potentially harmful to fish life, but there was no evidence of a fish kill.

The discharge of the blood in February last year was due to a pump failure in the treatment plant. Unipork was ordered to pay costs of £190.
