From the Fermoy Community Youth Centre in October 1985 to the London stage the following year is quite a move. Brian O'Reilly, one of Fermoy's most talented sons, has made it.Nineteen seventy-three was the year when the singer-songwriter wrote and staged his first musical based on the folk legend of The Children of Lir. From the beginning it was obvious that he had something special to offer. The Loudest Whisper, Brian's band, went on to win a recording contract with Polydor Records, and an album of the musical was subsequently released. In 1979 O'Reilly established his own recording studio, the Fiona Studio in Fermoy, but not before he had brought two more musicals to the stage, Perseus (1974), based on the Greek legend, and Maiden of Sorrow (1975), a folk opera. The musical, Buskin, however, has marked O'Reilly's triumph. It has received rave reviews.Today a new professional production, which has already been exceptionally well received, will open at the Cork Opera House, bringing O'Reilly back to his home roots. Next April an IrishAmerican promoter wants The Loudest Whisper to tour in the US.
