Mr Willie Ervin Fisher (39), was confirmed dead at 20:21 GMT at a prison in Raleigh, North Carolina, some 21 minutes after receiving a lethal injection, the statement said.

Mr Fisher was convicted and sentenced to death in 1993 for fatally stabbing his girlfriend, 29-year-old Angela Johnson, on April 2nd, 1992.

The US Supreme Court on Friday refused to grant Mr Fisher a stay of execution.

Another death row inmate, Mr Dennis Dowthitt, on Wednesday became the 700th person to be executed in the United States since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
