More than one million votes were wrongly added to South Africa's election results yesterday, causing confusion among political parties.

When the figures had been readjusted, the ANC - with more than 85 per cent of votes counted - was leading at national level with 66.5 per cent of the ballot.

Officials expected counting, which began when polls closed on Wednesday, to be completed by late last night or early today, with official results expected to be announced tomorrow night.
