The animal welfare group, Compassion in World Farming, has deplored "the animal suffering, and possible human suffering" which they say has resulted from farming practices "which made carnivores of naturally herbivorous animals".

In a statement on the BSE crisis, the group called for immediate effective action to safeguard public health and minimise animal suffering. CIWF believes that selective slaughter will not eradicate BSE from cattle in Britain. It also called on Britain to introduce a test for BSE in live animals.
