A 22-year-old man is seriously ill in a Belfast hospital following an assault in the city early this morning.
The man was walking with his girlfriend in the direction of the Shankill estate, when a car pulled up alongside them.
According to police, a passenger in the car got out and beat the man about the head with an unknown instrument.
The man's girlfriend was also struck in the assault.

The victim was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.
