Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have opened separate investigations into a building accident that killed a man (26) today.

The incident happened at around 12.30pm when the man was tipping a load of stones from a tractor and trailer unit at a building site at Ballinacurra near Midleton in East Cork.

Gardaí believe that the young man was standing between the tractor and trailer unit when the trailer unit became detached and that he was caught between the two vehicles.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor, and his body has been removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.

Gardaí have not yet named the man until all next of kin are notified, but it¿s understood that he is from the north Cork area.

The scene has been cordoned off for examination by gardaí and HSA inspectors, and the tractor and trailer have been removed for investigation.
