The number of people using the M1 motorway is expected to increase by 50 per cent daily over the summer, it was revealed today.

Officials said new toll booths on the main Belfast to Dublin route were preparing for a massive surge in traffic during the July and August holiday season.

The toll facility handles over of 20,000 vehicles each day and Celtic Roads Group (CRG), which manages the M1 motorway running from Dundalk to Dublin Airport, estimated that during peak summer days traffic levels will increase to 30,000 vehicles each day.

Mr Lorcan Wood, the deputy general manager of CRG, said the EazyPass electronic toll collection system would be installed shortly at the facility to help speed up journeys.
