A post-mortem on a 75-year-old Limerick man who was found dead in his home yesterday has revealed he died from a number injuries to the head and body.

The single man, named locally as Joe O'Doherty, was found lying his home in the grounds of a convent at Good Shepherd Avenue, Pennywell. Gardaí are treating the case as murder.

Mr O’Doherty had apparently been beaten up and detectives believe he may have opened the front door of his bungalow to his attacker. The alert was raised when his panic button alarm signal went off.

Gardaí are today appealing for witnesses who might have seen a man leaving the complex shortly before the discovery of Mr O'Doherty's body.
