German retailer Lidl has sought planning permission to build a supermarket on the site of the Stardust nightclub in Artane which burned down 30 years ago with the loss of 48 lives.

The discount supermarket group has applied to Dublin City Council for the development of a 1,921sq m store at the Butterly Business Park, which stands on the site of the Stardust. Patrick Butterly Sons Limited, owners of the business park, had been granted permission by the council to build 178 apartments and houses and a hotel on the site. This decision is currently under appeal to An Bord Pleanála.
