Irish Times columnist Brendan McWilliams has died after a short illness.

Mr McWilliams (63), a native of Waterville, Co Kerry, was the author of the popular Weather Eyecolumn.

He graduated in science from UCC in 1964 and later in Business Administration from UCD.

An accredited chartered meteorologist, he was a former deputy director of Met Éireann. During the 1990s, he served as director of the Programme of Expert Studies on Climate Change for the Department of the Environment.

Mr McWilliams was a fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society (UK), an honorary life member of the Royal Dublin Society, and an honorary member of the Irish Meteorological Society.

He lived in Wexford with his wife, Anne.
