1. Leaving Cert results

More than 4,000 students have failed their Leaving Cert maths exams, effectively locking them out of many third-level courses which require a pass as a basic entry requirement. Grades in the higher level maths paper have stabilised with more than 70 per cent securing an honour, but the failure rate in the ordinary level paper jumped from 3 to 9 per cent this year.

2. Annalise Murphy wins silver

For all the advance fear about the water in Rio, it has contained nothing but magical properties for Ireland. On a sparkling day in Guanabara Bay, Annalise Murphy navigated her course through nine crowded boats and four years of private Olympic disappointment to finish silver after the women's laser radial final race.

3. California wildfire

A fire that was raging out of control north of San Bernardino, California, on Tuesday night has forced the evacuation of 82,000 residents and consumed 15,000 acres, the authorities said.

4. St Vincent’s hospital bosses paid ‘once-off compensation’

Three senior managers at St Vincent's University Hospital were paid "once-off compensation" after their top-up payments were terminated, according to a report commissioned by the HSE.

5. Olympic ticket controversy

It has emerged that THG Sports, the agency that employs an Irish man arrested in Rio de Janeiro for alleged Olympic ticket touting, manned the telephone lines at certain times of the day for the Irish authorised tickets dealer, Pro10 Sports Management, but was not paid for doing so.

And finally, after bitter disappointment for Irish boxer Michael Conlan at Rio 2016, he has vowed not to fight for the AIBI again, saying amateur boxing "is completely dead. If you watch this Olympic Games and you've seen some of the decisions, Olympic boxing is dead. It's whoever pays the most money, whoever has the biggest wins."
