Body of fisherman found aboard trawler in west Cork

Gardaí in West Cork have begun an investigation into the death of a 52-year-old fisherman whose body was found aboard a trawler moored in Bantry late on Friday night.

Gardaí have requested the services of the State Pathologist’s office and said that the results of a post-mortem will determine the course of their investigation into the man’s death.

The Lithuanian national was pronounced dead aboard the Irish registered trawler after paramedics were alerted by a crewman and attended to him at around 10.30pm on Friday night.

Gardaí in turn were notified and they cordoned off the scene and the man’s body remained on board the trawler before being removed on Saturday to Cork University Hospital on Saturday.

It's expected that Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Margaret Bolster will carry out a post-mortem on the body of the dead fisherman at Cork University Hospital on Monday morning

Gardaí say that they are keeping an open mind on the fisherman’s death and are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the death of the man who had been socialising earlier in Bantry.

They have also spoken to other crew aboard the Irish owned trawler which had come into the Bantry and berthed at the quayside in the West Cork town after several days fishing at sea.

Gardaí have also notified the Health and Safety Authority as well as the Marine Casualty Investigation Board and both organisations are on standby pending the outcome of the autopsy.
