Nobel Prize winner and former US vice-president Al Gore will arrive in Ireland next weekend to address an environmental conference. Steven Carrollreports.

Mr Gore will be the keynote speaker at the Merrion Capital "Energy and Environment" conference, which is due to take place in Dublin's Royal College of Surgeons next Saturday.

The conference will examine Ireland's relationship with nuclear energy and British Airways' chief executive, Willie Walsh, will speak on the impact of airlines on the environment.

Mr Gore, who served as vice-president to Bill Clinton, has become known as an environmental activist since he left government in 2001, following his controversial election defeat by George W. Bush. His documentary on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth, won the 2006 Academy Award for best documentary.

Climate change and Mr Gore's experiences promoting the message of An Inconvenient Truthare expected to be among the features of his presentation to the 400-delegate conference.
