George Redmond arrested on four charges of corruption

The former assistant Dublin City and Council Manager Mr George Redmond was arrested this morning on suspicion of four counts of corruption.

Two of the charges related to alleged payments of £10,000 offered as inducements or rewards between June 1st 1985 and June 1st 1986.

Gardaí arrested Mr Redmond (77) at his home this morning and brought him to the Bridewell where he was read the charges. Mr Redmond made no answer.

Mr Redmond appeared at Dublin District Court this afternoon where the DPP served the five-volume book of evidence relating to the charges.

There was no objection by gardaí or the DPP with Mr Redmond's request to be released on bail.

Counsel for Mr Redmond said there was no suggestion his client "intended to avoid the matter before the court".

He asked the court to take Mr Redmond's financial status into account when fixing bail.

He said his client had recently settled a large tax debt and was a retired man receiving a pension of around £30,000 per year.

Mr Redmond was released on bail on his own surety of £900.

The case was adjourned until May 29th.
