Gardaí believe a man found dead on the outskirts of Dublin yesterday was the victim of a contract killer or a paramilitary organisation.

The man was today named as 39-year-old Mr Stephen Byrne from Inchicore in Dublin. He was married with two children.

His wife Bernadette said he had been "an anti-drugs activist and had nothing to do with paramilitary organisations".

A post mortem carried out by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, revealed he had died from a single gunshot wound to the back to the head before being dumped in Ballinascorney Woods on the Wicklow border.

The body was discovered by two hill-walkers. It was face-down in a ravine near a quarry at the entrance to the woods on a route popular with walkers.

The Garda has begun a murder investigation at Tallaght Garda Station, which can be contacted on 01-6666056.
