A man in his 30s was arrested near the scene yesterday and is also being at Raheny Garda station.

Both men have had their period of detention extended.

According to gardaí, the man died after he was confronted by a crowd following the attempted robbery of the shop. One of the men was armed with a knife.

A postmortem is being carried out later today by the State Pathologist.

The scene on the Howth Road remains sealed off and is being examined by Garda crime scene staff. Gardaí have also sealed off a house on nearby Dunseverick Road.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone who was in the Killester area between 8pm and 9pm yesterday evening to contact Clontarf Garda Station on 01 666 4800.

Former Fianna Fáil minister of state Senator Ivor Callely said the killing appeared to be the result of a botched robbery. Mr Callely said it was "a sad reflection of society today" and added that local people were shocked and were not accustomed to this type of crime in the area.

Local people also expressed their shock at the killing. "No one knows what's happened, there's loads of stories flying around . . . it's awful," said one woman.

The Supervalu store was closed today.
