Tennis: World number one Roger Federer booked his place in the third round of the Australian Open with a comprehensive straight-sets victory over Swedish veteran Jonas Bjorkman.

The number one seed, who comfortably disposed of Bjorn Phau in the first round, eased to a 6-2 6-3 6-2 triumph on the Rod Laver Arena.

Federer remains on course for a last-16 showdown with rising star Novak Djokovic, the 14th seed, who also reached round three with a comfortable 6-2 7-5 6-1 victory over Feliciano Lopez.

The 19-year-old Serbian, who won the Adelaide International warm-up event earlier this month, showed his class against Lopez to set-up a meeting with Thailand's Danai Udomchoke who dumped out Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2004 semi-finalist, in four sets.

Sixth seed Andy Roddick also powered through against Marc Gicquel with a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 triumph. He will now face former champion Marat Safin in a mouthwatering third-round clash.

The enigmatic Russian put his fans through the mill again before seeing off Israeli qualifier Dudi Sela, a man playing in only his second Grand Slam tournament.

The 2005 champion was just two points from defeat in the fourth set, but, aided by a brief rain delay, recovered to post a 6-3 5-7 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-0 victory.

There will be no return to the final for last year's runner-up Marcos Baghdatis after the Cypriot was beaten in an evening-session match by Gael Monfils.

Monfils overcame a mid-match injury scare, requiring lengthy treatment on a heel injury at the end of the third set before recovering to complete a 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 2-6 6-0 victory.

Spain's David Ferrer booked his place in the third round - the 16th seed beating another former winner, Thomas Johansson, 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2.

Mario Ancic, the ninth seed, came from a set down to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in four to keep his bid on track, while Tommy Robredo (7) raced to a straight-sets defeat of Jurgen Melzer.

In the women's event, the army of leading Russian seeds continued their smooth progress through the draw.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadia Petrova and Elena Dementieva, all seeded to make the last eight, all enjoyed victories in the second round.

Seventh seed Dementieva had the toughest battle; she needed three sets to beat Germany's Martina Muller, eventually winning 7-5 3-6 6-0.

But both Kuznetsova (3) and Petrova (5) dropped only three games en route to the last 32 - the same number as Czech star Nicole Vaidisova, the 10th seed.

Reigning champion Amelie Mauresmo also enjoyed a routine second-round victory during the evening session. She swept to a comfortable 6-2 6-2 win against Russian Olga Poutchkova and now meets Eva Birnerova in round three.

Jelena Jankovic maintained her impressive start to the year with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Spain's Virginia Ruano Pascual in the second round. The 11th seed, who won her second career title in Auckland earlier this month, will face Victoria Azarenka in the next round.

Former champion Serena Williams endured a nervous victory over Anne Kremer - and then admitted she must improve in the coming days. The American, who is unseeded after injury saw the 2003 and 2005 champion slip to 81st in the world rankings, fell a break behind and trailed 4-1 in the first-set tie-break before sealing a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 victory. The 25-year-old will now face fifth seed Petrova.

Patty Schnyder (8), Dinara Safina (9) and Daniela Hantuchova (15) all enjoyed first-round wins after having their matches held over from Tuesday. Some seeds did fall though, Francesca Schiavone and Marion Bartoli and Ai Sugiyama all bowing out.
