A Sligo woman has been sentenced to three years in jail for perverting the course of justice after she lied to gardaí following a road crash in which her best friend was killed.

Rebecca McLoughlin(25) had claimed that her friend, Melissa McManus, had been driving when the car in which they were travelling hit a wall as they were on their way back from a beach party in Rosses Point in 2004.

Ms McLoughlin, of Sea View Park in Sligo, initially told gardaí that Ms McManus had been driving the car. However, she admitted that she had been the driver of the car four years after the crash.
