THE decision by the Government not to grant South Coast Community Television a broadcasting licence has been greeted with dismay, and it is now possible the company, which claims to represent 100,000 viewers, will oppose that decision in the courts.

Mr John Hurley, a spokesman for the company, which has been relaying signals for years to customers using a deflecting service, said yesterday that the company had been operating in the south Cork and west Waterford areas.

Mr Hurley said that the question of running a candidate on the issue in the forthcoming general election was a real possibility, but as yet no decision had been taken. Legal advice was also being sought.

"The Taoiseach came to Carrigaline some years ago," Mr Hurley said, and promised to regularise the position of companies like South Coast, but every one feels badly disheartened at the latest decision. That was a hollow promise."
