The estate owned by the family of Diana, Princess of Wales, where the 36-year-old princess is buried on an island, will be open to the public for two months next year.

Althorp Park, 75 miles north-west of London, will be opened from July 1st, the princess's birthday, to August 30th next year, the Spencer family said yesterday.

The first anniversary of her death, August 31st, will be preserved as a private family day. On open days, the public will be allowed only to view the island, rather than visit the grave.

A spokeswoman for the Spencers said an appropriate memorial to the princess would be situated in the park. The number of people allowed in would be limited to preserve the dignity and beauty of Diana's final resting place.

The spokeswoman said it had not yet been decided if visitors would be charged an entrance fee, but if that was the case all profits would go to charity. An ironstone stable block built in 1732 or 1733 in the park is to be converted into a museum dedicated to Diana's life.

After her death in a car crash in Paris, the princess was buried on the island in a private ceremony on September 6th.

The original plan was for the princess to be buried in the Spencer family chapel. But it was feared that this would have resulted in Great Brington village being swamped by visitors for years to come.
