British army technical experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a blast bomb discovered in a field close to Drumcree Bridge.

The device was found by soldiers during the early morning operation to remove razor wire from fields surrounding the church.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White said those who had left it were guilty of attempted murder.

"This must prove beyond doubt to all reasonable people that the protective measures at Drumcree were essential to protect the lives of police officers and soldiers on duty over the past week.

"A blast bomb is a lethal weapon and those responsible for bringing it to Drumcree and throwing it at security forces must realise that in doing so they are guilty of attempted murder," he said.

Army engineers began dismantling the barricade at Drumcree early today.

The Orange Order has been prevented from marching down the nationalist Garvaghy Road since 1998 but this year there was less of the violence that has marked previous demonstrations. PA
