There was no offence in an interview published in yesterday's Sunday Business Postwith the Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Desmond Connell, a spokesman for the Archbishop has said.

Speaking on RTE's Morning Irelandthis morning, Mr Ronan Mullen said the interview contained a "contextualised", clear and honest statement of faith, and that Catholics held "no acrimony" towards the Church of Ireland.

In the interview, Dr Connell appeared critical of the Church of Ireland practice of inviting all baptised Christians to take Holy Communion at its Eucharist services.

In response, the Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Walton Empey said he was saddened by Dr Connell's comments which he believed would cause acrimony between Catholics and Protestants.

"I think Archbishop Emprey made a very valuable comment when he spoke about the impact of these debates generally," said Mr Mullen.

"I would like to think that we wouldn't see this as a row.

"[And] there's certainly no acrimony from Archnishop Connell if you read the script of yesterday's interview."

Mr Mullen added Dr Connell had been asked about his teaching on intercomunion that he, as Archbishop of Dublin, believed his main duty was to share the teaching of the Catholic Church on such issues.

"Its part of the process that we have to go through - an honest sharing of our own deep faith and moving towards the day when we can say yes we can take communion together."
