An Egyptian woman was killed today when a building housing two families collapsed in a working-class neighborhood of Cairo, police said.

Police, who said rescue operations were still underway at the end of the morning, feared another six people could be buried under the rubble.

The authorities had ordered the demolition of the building two years ago, but the owners had not complied, the police said.

Building collapses are common in Egypt, where there is a widespread construction in violation of building codes.
