CIRCUIT CRIMINAL COURT:A South American man who said he sold everything he owned in order to bring cocaine to Ireland and make money for his family has been jailed for 3½ years.

Gordon Plass (41) was stopped at Dublin Airport and found to have swallowed 55 pellets of cocaine, weighing 556g. It had a market value at the time of €38,920.

Plass had travelled from his native Guyana in South America, via Trinidad and Gatwick airport.

Judge Martin Nolan at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court said Plass had found himself in a desperate situation.

He said he could depart from the presumptive minimum sentence of 10 years because of Plass’s plea of guilty and his full admissions to gardaí.

The sentence was backdated to February.
