Weld yet to decide

RACING: Dermot Weld is giving himself 10 days to decide on which international option to take with Vinnie Roe for his next start.

The star stayer has emerged unscathed from his unique four in a row in Saturday's Irish Field St Leger at the Curragh but no decision has been made where he goes next.

"He is in the Arc, the Canadian International and the Melbourne Cup in Australia but there will be no decision until the week after next," Weld said yesterday.

"It's the same with Media Puzzle and Melbourne. We will see with him but I was slightly disappointed with his run on Saturday," he added.

Cashmans make Vinnie Roe an 8 to 1 shot to improve on his 2002 fourth to Media Puzzle in Melbourne and there remains a chance that Saturday's runner up Brian Boru could also travel to Flemington and become Aidan O'Brien's first Melbourne Cup runner.

"We'll do a bit of exercise with him tomorrow and then we'll know more," O'Brien said yesterday.

O'Brien and jockey Jamie Spencer will be represented in today's €50,000 Nursery at Listowel by Lord Nelson but the deep ground will hardly be ideal for the Fasliyev colt.

John Oxx's filly Tazmeera in contrast won on heavy ground at Tralee and is preferred to Lough Gem who won at Down Royal eight days ago.

The ground is also an issue with The Castles in the seven -furlong maiden but stamina isn't after being just headed over a mile and a half at Tramore last time out.
