RACING: Galway was an appropriate setting for a major milestone in Dermot Weld's training career as the master of Rosewell House saddled his 3,000th winner in Ireland at the course that he has made his own.
Clearing The Water provided the victory in the 1759 EBF Maiden and the Moyglare Stud-owned son of Sadler's Wells also moved Pat Smullen on to the half-century for the season.
Smullen kicked for home half a mile out on the even-money favourite and kept him going down the straight to hold the challenge of Son Of Mary by a length-and-a-half.
"It's nice to have it for Moyglare Stud as they have been wonderful loyal supporters of mine for the last 25 years," said Weld of the achievement. "It was a workmanlike performance (by the winner). He was a bit keen early and that made it harder to come up the hill. We'll look for a winners of one now for him."
Charlie Swan produced High Reef in tip-top form to land the featured Guinness Premier Handicap for local owner Aidan Connolly.
