Web spins out to cover world

The GAA took another significant modernising step with the inauguration of their official web site yesterday. After many months of research and preparation by the association's communications and technology work group, the site (www.gaa.ie) was displayed for the first time at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin ahead of this weekend's annual congress.

Internet access is expected to bring significant benefits to both the Gaelic games community and those involved in reporting and promoting the sport.

Speaking at the launch yesterday, the GAA president, Joe McDonagh, said the site would offer "instant global connectivity" and would form "an integral part of the organisation's efforts to communicate with its members here in Ireland and throughout the world".

The site already contains a large amount of material, including fixtures, results and teams, as well as information on GAA officers, structures and coaching. It will also include a camogie and handball section. A daily news feed will also be provided by the Examiner, including match reports and interviews, and users can contribute their views through the site's email access.
