Waterford Utd 1 Cork City 0:Waterford United's unexpected return to the top flight at the expense of Shelbourne saw them pitted against Munster rivals at the RSC last night. But the new Blues weren't intimidated by the tension of the derby and just about shaded the exchanges.

Their speed and hard work were rewarded on 69 minutes when a corner from the left by Stephen Cooling deceived Michael Devine in a crowded goalmouth and ended in the back of the net.

In the final quarter, City surged forward and United lived extremely dangerously. Seven minutes from the end, goalkeeper Packie Holden dived full length to turn out a Roy O'Donovan pile-driver for a corner. Three minutes into the six added on, Holden produced another fine save from John O'Flynn.

WATERFORD UNITED: Holden, Flynn, Hedderman, Keely, Breen, Hayes, Cooling (Browne, 93 mins), McCarthy, Sullivan (Kavanagh, 74 mins), Harte, Warren (Mulcahy, 85 mins).
