Sigerson Cup, quarter-finals: Queen's University: 1-12 UCD: 2-5A fine display from Armagh senior player Charlie Vernon helped Queen's University to progress to the finals weekend of the Sigerson Cup which they will host at the beginning of March.
But Queen's will be waiting anxiously on the availability of the dynamic midfielder who was taken off with a shoulder injury towards the end.
The teams were level on three points each when UCD's Shane Lennon missed from in front of goal, and UCD were also unsuccessful with two relatively simple frees. Queen's led by 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval and they stretched the gap to five with points from Vernon (two) and Michael O'Rourke.
A goal by Lennon put UCD back in business 12 minutes after the break only for Queen's corner forward Ciarán O'Reilly to palm the ball into the back of the net in the next attack of the game. That broke UCD's resolve with a goal by substitute Brian Mullin for UCD late on proving immaterial to the result.
