Ulster replay goes to Clones

THE ULSTER championship replay between Tyrone and Down will be played at Clones next Sunday.

THE ULSTER championship replay between Tyrone and Down will be played at Clones next Sunday.

The decision to reject requests from Tyrone for the game to be moved to Omagh was taken at a meeting of the Ulster Council last night. Down had reacted angrily to speculation that the replay of last Sunday's drawn preliminary round tie would be a home game for their opponents.

Tyrone had pressed for home advantage due to the fact that, technically, last Sunday's clash in Clones was a home game for Down, but they were unable to stage the fixture as the county does not have a ground with adequate capacity.

Tyrone argued that they should therefore gain home advantage, particularly as they have upgraded Healy Park in Omagh to accommodate up to 21,000 spectators.

Tyrone are expected to name their team tonight, with midfielder Gerard Cavlan an unlikely starter. Cavlan limped off 10 minutes into the second half of last Sunday's game.
