Tyrone dethrone champions

WOMEN'S FOOTBALLMAYO'S REIGN as League champions is over as they lost to Tyrone 1-10 to 1-6 at home in Kilfin yesterday. Aided by a gale-force wind Tyrone opened up an early three-point lead before Gemma Begley set up Ailish Gormley for a well-taken goal after 15 minutes.

Mayo responded with a spectacular goal from Fiona McHale who finished off a 35-yard solo run by blasting the ball to the net.

Trailing 1-6 to 1-2 at the break, Mayo squandered several chances from play and missed some scoreable frees. Lisa Cafferkey and Aoife Herbert reduced the gap to three points but Tyrone, helped by a four-point contribution from All Star Gemma Begley, were always able to keep their noses in front.

Tyrone will fight it out with their Ulster neighbours Armagh to see who'll book second spot in their group next weekend.
