Golf:David Toms frittered away a commanding seven-stroke lead at the Crowne Plaza Invitational when he shot a four-over 74 with Charlie Wi taking over at the end of the field.

Toms had started the day with a healthy lead after successive rounds of eight-under 62 and in the process matched Pat Perez’s scoring record for the first 36 holes of a tournament dating from 2009.

And he appeared on course to continue his form as he opened with a birdie but successive bogeys on the second and third started to derail the American. He endured two more bogeys, as well as a double bogey on the 14th, while sinking just one more birdie.

Wi took full advantage with his four-under 66 propelling him one shot ahead of Toms.

Toms said: “I felt after the first six holes, I was just hanging on, trying not to make a mistake. Maybe I’ll go out there with a little pressure off of me and see if we can do better on Sunday.”

John Senden (70) was alone in third at nine under, a stroke in front of fellow Australian Stuart Appleby (67) and Americans Paul Goydos (67) and Mark Wilson (71).
