Misfortune struck for Jennie Timoney, the number two seed, during the second round of the Dunlop Irish Open junior tennis championships at Fitzwilliam yesterday.

Timoney, seeded to meet Dearbhla Kelly in Saturday's under-18 final injured a a knee when chasing down a return by Aoife O'Doherty and had to retire.

Paul Brickley's withdrawal at the quarter final stage of the Junior boys singles was unusual if not unique.

Brickley, the number three seed from Cork had incurred a previous warning for transgressing the code of conduct and was losing out to Anthony Sinclair, a set down and trailing 2-0 in the second set when his father intervened by withdrawing the youth following further unacceptable court behaviour.
